Peninsula Urban Forestry is a local environmental company focused on connecting our natural environment with our built communities. We provide objective solutions to plant management and ecological restoration. We believe plants, trees and the urban ecosystem require integrated, holistic management. By balancing out communities with both installed and natural infrastructure, we can develop sustainable inter-ecosystem cohesion and resiliency

We are based in the Northern Olympic region of Western Washington. We service all of Clallam, Jefferson, Kitsap and Mason counties. Including cities of Forks, Port Angeles, Sequim, Port Townsend, Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island, Kingston, Port Orchard and Shelton. We also provide consulting services to Victoria in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

Our client list includes homeowners, developers & builders, engineers, landscape architects, hospitals, colleges, geotechnical and engineering professionals, contractors, surveyors, tree service providers, and fruit tree farms.

​​Owner, John Bornsworth, is a Member of the American Society of Consulting Arborists, the Society of Municipal Arborists, and the Society of Ecological Restoration. He is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist and Certified Municipal Specialist, a Qualified Tree Risk Assessor and licensed by the Washington State Department of Agriculture as a Commercial Pesticide Operator.

Senior associate Cassidy Grattan has 20 years of experience with terrestrial and marine wildlife including extensive surveying of Washington and California Endangered and critically Listed species.

Meet Our Team

JOHN BORNSWORTH

OWNER – ARBORIST & PLANT ECOLOGIST

John Bornsworth, president of Peninsula Urban Forestry, provides leadership and strategy to an interdisciplinary team of practitioners and scientists. John aims to develop goal orientated solutions to complex environmental issues within our communities. With an integrated, holistic approach urban plant ecology and green space management, he brings new perspectives to community forestry, green infrastructure and urban design. His sectors of experience are community forestry, tree diagnostics, ecologically critical area consulting and vegetation management.

COURTNEY BORNSWORTH

OWNER – BIOLOGIST & ARBORIST

Courtney is a trained zoologist and marine biologist. She has spent the last five years working in the fields of salmon habitat restoration, botany, and wetland ecology in both Southeast Alaska, and Western Washington. She now spends her time out in the field conducting surveys, designing restoration plans, and assisting with urban forestry consulting for Peninsula Urban Forestry. She is a Certified Arborist and a Qualified Tree Risk Assessor through the International Society of Arboriculture. Courtney manages our native plant nursery.

TARYN ASMUS

BIOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN

Taryn has a variety of field experiences that include working exclusively with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe on the Elwha River restoration project, wildlife survey conducting, native plant nursey work, supervising and working with conservation corps members in trail work, habitat restoration and invasive species control, working with private and commercial landscapes, and grounds work for tree removals and pruning. Taryn also has experience in administration, working with the public and outdoor education.

JUSTIN VENDETTUOLI

WETLAND BIOLOGIST

Justin Vendettuoli received his B.S. in Wildlife and Conservation Biology from the University of Rhode Island, with a research focus on ecological impacts of invasive species. After relocating to Washington State to work in conservation and discovering a love of wetlands, he expanded his education with the University of Washington’s Wetland Science and Management certification program. Since joining Peninsula Urban Forestry’s team Justin has aided in environmental consulting and permitting, and supported the GIS and Mapping aspects of the firm. Justin further diversifies Peninsula Urban Forestry’s ecologically comprehensive team by bringing research expertise and a passion for wetlands.

WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST

Cassidy Grattan’s 20 years of diverse wildlife experience is key to our biological consulting and habitat resource assessment. He has surveyed for endangered species in California & Washington.

MICKI MCNAUGHTON, M.SC.

URBAN & COMMUNITY FORESTRY PLANNING

Micki is an urban forestry and natural resource consultant focused on helping communities realize the maximum potential from their urban trees and natural spaces through planning and program development. She is an International Society of Arborists Certified Arborist and Municipal Specialist, and is certified in Wetland Science and Management through the University of Washington.
